Samantha Kitchel delivers a well-crafted coming-of-age story in her debut novel, “The Beauty in the Beasts.” Always remaining focused on the development of her main character, Lillian Hemlen, an orphan who despite a scar on her face is adopted by a strange couple, the reader’s understanding of love and the nature of good and evil evolves with the protagonist. Plot-wise, the story is more than just a retelling of the fairy tale that the novel’s title plays on, as it draws from a number of influences, such as V.C. Andrews “Flowers in the Attic” and Bronte’s “Wuthering Heights.” All in all, this novel is an enjoyable read not just for the young adult crowd but for mature readers as well.
it was a new twist on the beauty and beast story. It was about a child who had a horrible scar, and how she falls in love with a boy who was turned into a beast at 17 because he was attacked by beast that lived in the woods near his house. it is really a tragic love story.
